How Can You Make Your Teeth Whiter?
Teeth whitening is a dental treatment which is very much in demand and is becoming increasingly popular throughout the world.
There are different types of teeth whitening options available ranging from in chair, such as those offered by us at Pinnacle Dental, right through to DIY take-home kits.
Unfortunately, life's little pleasures like coffee, wine, and smoking can leave your teeth stained, yellow and unattractive.
This has a direct effect on the way you smile. Many people prefer to hide their smile rather than showing off their stained teeth.
That's why it's important to treat stained and discoloured teeth and restore your self-confidence in the process.
At Pinnacle Dental, we are a professional cosmetic dentist that specialises in treating discoloured teeth which helps to brighten your smile and improve your self-esteem.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?
Teeth whitening is a dental procedure that helps to lighten teeth by getting rid of stains and discolouration.
All the products used in teeth whitening have either hydrogen peroxide (HP) or Carbamide peroxide (CP) as an ingredient.
The peroxide contained in teeth whitening products essentially dissolves the organic stains on the tooth, which in turn changes its colour and produces a whiter effect.
The peroxide enters the tiny pores on the dentin and enamel part of the tooth and then break up the stains that block out light.
The result of this is that more light passes through the teeth, making them look whiter.
While you can whiten your teeth from home using over-the-counter treatments, you will generally achieve much better results by visiting our team at Pinnacle Dental.
Our professional treatments have a much higher peroxide content, are less abrasive, and are more effective without damaging the enamel.
What Are My Teeth Whitening Options?
In-Chair Whitening Treatments
The first thing we will do is make sure that your soft tissue and gums are well protected from the bleaching agent. Then, we will apply a whitening gel onto the surface of your teeth.
This gel contains HP or CP as described above, and we may also shine a laser on your teeth to make the process faster.
The laser lets us work on individual teeth for different amounts of time, which is important if you have uneven staining.
In place of a laser, heat or light may be used. For those looking for fast results and don’t suffer from tooth sensitivity, then this is a great option for you.
Take Home Products from the Dentist
You can also opt for take-home trays that have been cast to fit the shape of your teeth and your mouth for tooth whitening.
You only need to apply the whitening product on the trays and wear the trays for the specified amount of time.
The take-home products are supervised by us and usually contain a lower peroxide content than the products used for in-chair treatments.
The trays are designed to hold the teeth whitening product directly against your teeth while minimising contact with soft mouth tissue and gums.
Some products contain fluoride to help treat and/or prevent mild tooth sensitivities.
The typical stains caused by ageing will whiten in about 7 to 14 days if the tray is worn overnight.
OTC whitening products contain a very small amount of peroxide, making them slower and less effective.
Most of these products contain an acidic solution that is meant to make them more effective, but can potentially damage the enamel. So, always use them with caution.
There is also a variety of OTC toothpastes that contain a small amount of peroxide or a polishing agent.
These types of toothpastes are typically effective at whitening teeth and removing surface stains, though some can be abrasive.
Over time, the abrasive kind can gradually wear down the enamel of your teeth and make the teeth look yellow.
Are There Any Side Effects from Teeth Whitening?
The side effects of teeth whitening are often temporary and can include increased teeth sensitivity and pain in the gums and tongue.
There’s also a possibility of translucency, which is a result of over-whitening. However, this is very rare and will only occur if the whitening process is over-extended.
With take-home products, there’s a small risk of ingesting the product, which could lead to burning sensations, nausea, and vomiting.
However, the chances of this happening are slim as the teeth-whitening tray will fit almost perfectly around your teeth.
Keep in mind that the peroxide contained in teeth whitening products can burn your gums if they aren’t properly protected.
This is why it’s important to leave teeth whitening procedures in the hands of professional dentists like Pinnacle Dental.
